ORIENTING INTERNAL STANDARD METHOD FOR CLAY MINERAL X-RAY ANALYSIS by
نویسنده
چکیده
USE of a platy internal standard that will orient to the same degree as clay minerals preserves the relative diffraction intensities between the basal reflections from the platy components, regardless of degree of orientation. The method is illustrated with basic zinc chloride and pyrophyllite as the internal standards for quantitative clay mineral anMysis in the systems kaolinite-liVid illite and 2M1 museovite-montmorillonite. Illite does not orient to the same degree as kaolinite at high illite concentrations. In such nonlinear systems empirical working curves are more reliable than fixed ratios of the scattering powers of the clay minerals present, l~andom interstratification of 10/15.4/~ layers causes a minimum in 001/001 peak height at about 33% of the 15.4 ~ component. Peak width varies in a similar but inverse pattern, so that the integrated intensity increases in a smooth curve from muscovite to montmorillonite. The major error in applieatior~ of this quantitative method arises from uncertainty as to the correct allocation of peak areas in cases of overlap of the mixed-layer peak with those of discrete 10~ and 14~ clays also present.

Quantitative X-ray Powder Diffraction Analyses of Clays Using an Orienting Internal Standard and Pressed Disks of Bulk Shale Samples
Abstraet--Quantitative analysis of clay minerals by X-ray powder diffraction requires oriented clays in order to increase detection limits of the analyses. This is achieved commonly either by smear or sedimentation techniques; however, these techniques can lead to poor analytical precision when used with an internal standard because they often produce non-homogeneous internal standard-clay mine...
متن کاملThermal Analysis: A Complementary Method to Study the Shurijeh Clay Minerals
Clay minerals are considered the most important components of clastic reservoir rock evaluation studies. The Shurijeh gas reservoir Formation, represented by shaly sandstones of the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous age, is the main reservoir rock in the Eastern Kopet-Dagh sedimentary Basin, NE Iran. In this study, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopic (S...
متن کاملA Method for the Quantitative Estimation of Clay Minerals in North Pacific Deep-sea Sediments
-The addition of a 10% talc internal standard to North Pacific sediments allows the relative abundances of clay minerals to be determined both accurately and precisely by X-ray powder diffractometry. Linear programming can be used to generate factors for converting talc-normalized peak areas to weight percentages; hence, absolute clay-mineral abundances can be estimated. This procedure minimize...

The aim of the current research is to examine the potential of locally available natural clay mineral to act as an effective absorbent for waste engine oil treatment. The clay mineral was collected from the southern region of Saudi Arabia and was used without any kind of surface modification. The clay mineral was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XPS) and Braunner-Em...

The objective of this study was to validate the use of bone mineral measurements of the calcaneus bone by dual X-ray and laser (DXL) in a cross-sectional study carried out in an osteoporosis clinic. Measurements of bone mineral density (BMD) at proximal femur and spine were obtained by dual-energy photon X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Osteoporosis was defined by a DEXA T-score <-2.5 at the femora...
